Flex Reimagined

Repositioning and rebuilding our Flex product from a nice-to-have scheduling tool to a need-to-have for student safety, accountability & engagement in 9 months.

Opportunity

Flex 1.0 launched in summer 2024 as a lightweight experiment using our existing hall pass technology. The goal was to validate whether a flexible scheduling product could expand our TAM. The results showed strong early PMF and demand, giving us confidence to invest in a complete rebuild.

My Role

I led the end-to-end relaunch of Flex, owning product and design strategy from discovery through launch and driving collaboration across teams from engineering to GTM.

What we built

Flex Reimagined shifted from “activities as hall passes” to a platform built for true flexibility — before, during, or after school.

By moving beyond “Flex for flex periods” to “Flex for flexibility,” we made it intuitive for teachers, admins, and students to manage any scheduling need, not just schools with a dedicated flex period.

activity creation & visibility

We overhauled the teacher and admin experience by splitting and redesigning activity creation into a simpler, more intuitive flow. Activities became editable, reducing duplicates and frustration, and cross-teacher visibility made it far easier for staff to manage students across activities (and offer more creative activities).

Activity Sections

The activity roster is the pulse of Flex — the place where teachers and admins manage activities before, during, and after each session. From sign-ups and attendance to check-ins, check-outs, and drop-ins, the redesigned activity sections moved us beyond a “hall pass hack” to a dedicated, flexible experience built around real activity workflows. Because this directly affects student safety and accountability, it had to be as intuitive and delightful as possible — a foundation for broader use cases and higher customer satisfaction.

Student Home

We heard directly from students that they wanted to sign up for activities, they just needed an easier way. For Flex to be successful, it had to be as student-driven as possible so it became one less thing for admins and teachers to manage. We shifted sign-up from being buried in the calendar to front and center on the student homepage, reducing friction and driving higher student engagement.

Discovery

Over seven months, we visited 10 schools across five states to see how Flex was actually used and what schools still needed. We built ongoing relationships through CAB calls and 1:1 follow-ups, ensuring we weren’t just doing one-off visits but co-building with schools every step of the way.
